Understanding Typography

We often reflect on the power of the written word, but rarely do we consider the designer’s role in emulating the tone of the word or sentence.

Behind the scenes, a designer has taken the time to consider the relationship between the look of the text and what the text says. In reality, different moods, atmospheres, and even trends can be expressed simply through the type choice. But what actually is typography—and why is it so vital?

Let’s kick off with the basics: just what actually is typography? Typography is the art of arranging letters and text in a way that makes the copy legible, clear, and visually appealing to the reader.

Relevant Skills

Measuring Units

For font sizes for mobile devices, ems is considered to be the basic standard. Designers are able to easily scale the sizes of the typefaces because it is based on percentages.

Font Size

As designers, you have to know the appropriate font sizes when designing for multiple screens. Typefaces that work on desktops may not necessarily work on mobile devices.

Choose Contrasting Colors

By placing text on a contrasting background, designers are able to add visual interest to the layout. Contrast can be applied to the heading or sub-heading or in relation to the text underneath it.

Selecting Fonts

It is important to choose the right font to ensure the readability of the content. When choosing a font, it is better to pay attention to the overall legibility than the style of the typeface.
